Emergency services were called to the incident at Big Park, Peacehaven, at around 7.50pm on December 21.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service sent two fire engines and said no injuries were reported.

Sussex Police is currently investigating the incident.

A spokesman for the force said: “Police were called to a fire outside the Gateway Cafe in Peacehaven at around 8.30pm on Sunday, December 21.

“An investigation is underway to establish the full facts and identify any suspects.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police online or via 101, quoting serial 1076 of 21/12.”

A spokesperson for the Gateway Cafe said the business is open as usual .

“Thankfully due to the prompt alerts and efforts of members of the local community and the fire service the fire was quickly contained to just the external toilet areas,” they added.

“At least one of the toilets will have to remain closed for the foreseeable future.

“The police have been on site and will be going over the CCTV systems.

“Thank you for all the amazing messages of support and best wishes. Thankfully no one was hurt.”

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 7.53pm on December 21 to reports of a fire in a public toilet cubicle in Piddinghoe Avenue, Peacehaven.

“Two fire engines from Newhaven and Roedean were in attendance. Crews used one breathing apparatus and one hosereel jet to extinguish the fire.

“There were no injuries reported.”
