The 42-year-old stole at least £3,000 worth of items after smashing his way into homes
A prolific burglar who checked himself out of hospital following a serious crash to commit more crimes has now been jailed.
George Dunn burgled five properties in Tonbridge, Cranbrook, Paddock Wood and Ashford over a three-week period between June and July of this year.
The 42-year-old stole at least £3,000 worth of items including jewellery, watches, handbags, money, bank cards and war medals after he smashed his way into the homes.
Officers investigating the burglaries found DNA evidence and CCTV footage that connected Dunn to the properties.
He had left a glove at the scene of one home while traces of his blood were found at others. As investigations were being carried out, Dunn sustained life-threatening injuries after crashing his car into a wall and then a fence in Bayhall Road, Tunbridge Wells, in the early hours of July 20.
He was disqualified from driving at the time and had no insurance. Despite the severity of his injuries, Dunn still made attempts to flee the scene as officers arrived to provide assistance.
He was eventually removed from the vehicle by fire crews before being taken to a London hospital by paramedics. Before he was in a medically fit state to be interviewed about the collision, Dunn discharged himself from hospital on September 1.
Then just one month later, he burgled a sixth home in Sissinghurst Road, Biddenden, where he was spotted by a neighbour falling out of a window.
Officers were able to track him down and Dunn, of Quarry Road in Maidstone, was arrested on October 15 and charged with six counts of burglary and multiple traffic offences.
The burglar pleaded guilty to all the offences at Maidstone Crown Court and was sentenced at the same court on Tuesday, December 23. A further eight burglaries were also taken into consideration.
Detective Inspector Lisa Featherstone said: “Dunn is a prolific offender who was determined to continue committing these invasive crimes. Not even a life changing injury deterred him, and he discharged himself from hospital to not only try and evade the consequences of his actions but to continue offending.
“This was a lengthy investigation and officers worked hard to link Dunn to multiple burglaries and driving offences across the county. I’d like to thank the victims for their continued support throughout and hope they find some comfort in knowing Dunn has been locked up for these crimes.”
