Chris Rea released 25 solo albums during his career
Singer Chris Rea, known for his distinctive gravelly voice which delivered hits such as Driving Home For Christmas, has died at the age of 74, a spokesperson for his family has confirmed.
The singer, born in Middlesbrough, has sold more than 40 million records worldwide and topped the UK album charts twice. A spokesperson for Rea’s wife and two children said “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Chris.
“He passed away peacefully in hospital earlier today following a short illness, surrounded by his family.”
Rea had become synonymous with the festive season following the 1986 release of his hit Driving Home for Christmas, with the tune returning to the Christmas charts each year.
According to the singer’s website, the song “tells the story of a weary traveller making his way home, a moment of warmth, humour and holiday spirit that’s never lost its magic”.
Rea was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1994, undergoing a life-saving operation to remove his pancreas, gallbladder, and a portion of his liver. The operation left him with type 1 diabetes.
