The two new platform lifts are part of a £100,000 pilot project at John Smith Court in Airdrie, a retirement housing complex.

North Lanarkshire Council leader Jim Logue said: “This project is all about supporting residents to live independently and safely.
“The difference these lifts have already made is remarkable.
“I’m delighted that we’ll be extending this work across the rest of the complex so more tenants can enjoy the same benefits.
“This marks our ongoing commitment to improving accessibility, supporting older residents, and ensuring retirement housing continues to meet peoples’ needs now and into the future.”
The lifts are designed to help older residents and those with mobility challenges access upper-floor homes, promoting independence and reducing feelings of isolation.
Some residents had previously been unable to use communal areas or move around freely due to the stairs.

The project was delivered through North Lanarkshire Council’s Enterprise Contract partnership with Mears, with Saltire responsible for installing the Motala platform lifts.
The scheme has proved so successful that the council now plans to install similar lifts in the remaining closes at John Smith Court.
Work on the wider rollout is expected to begin in spring 2026.
