It is the second hospital in Kent introducing a face mask rule
A Kent hospital has introduced a mandatory face mask rule amid a rise in flu cases. The new measure from Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham aims to help protect patients, visitors and staff from winter viruses.
The move comes at a time when flu cases have risen sharply across the UK. Hospital admissions for flu have increased by 55 per cent last week in Engliand.
The new requirement has come into force on Tuesday (December 16). A spokesperson for the hospital said: “With flu cases rising rapidly in the community, patients and visitors are being asked to wear a face mask when attending the hospital.
“We are introducing this important measure to help protect patients, visitors and staff from flu and other winter viruses. You can pick up a mask at hospital entrances. Please use the hand sanitiser provided and wash your hands regularly during your visit.”
It follows Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford introducing in the measures on Wednesday (December 10). A spokesperson said at the time: “From today, everyone entering a clinical area must wear a surgical mask.
“Masks will be available at entrances and hand sanitising stations are being redeployed across the site and will be regularly topped up. The hospital is also asking anyone who feels unwell not to visit until they are fully recovered.
“This is particularly important as many patients receiving care may be at increased risk of complications from flu.” Wards caring for flu patients are temporarily restricting visiting to two people per patient for the next fourteen days.
They added: “With flu activity rising quickly, it is essential that everyone on site plays a part in reducing transmission. These steps are straightforward but powerful in helping to protect the most vulnerable.”
In a statement shared on X, the UKHSA cautioned: “Flu is rising sharply and is circulating at medium levels. It is now having a greater impact on adults.”
