The major bridge refurbishment, including upgrades to rail and slip roads, is taking place on the M8 at Junction 26 (Hillington Interchange).
The project, being carried out by Amey on behalf of Transport Scotland, began in September 2025 and will run in five phases until spring 2026.
It involves extensive work on four key bridge structures, focusing on vehicle parapets, structure waterproofing, safety barriers, and carriageway surfacing.
The changes in traffic management for the second phase of the project aim to ease journeys for consumers during the Christmas season.
All slip roads connecting the area will be in use as usual, reopening between Thursday, December 18, 2025, and Monday, January 5, 2026.
Additionally, the M8 Junction 26 eastbound on-slip road re-opened on Tuesday, December 1, 2025, and will remain open.
However, some restrictions are still planned.
Between 10pm and 6am on Monday, December 15, Tuesday, December 16, and Wednesday December 17 2025, the M8 Junction 25A westbound off-slip road will be shut.
Drivers will be diverted along a marked route using the M8 westbound to Junction 26, through the Hillington Interchange to Hillington Road, and along King’s Inch Road to Old Govan Road.
The M8 Junction 25A westbound off-slip road will reopen as normal from Thursday, December 18, 2025.
During this period, a 2+2 contraflow will remain operational on the M8’s mainline carriageway at Junction 26 (Hillington Interchange), with narrower lanes and the closure of lanes one and two of the eastbound direction.
A speed limit of 40mph continues to apply throughout the project’s duration.
Average speed cameras are ensuring adherence to the speed limits for the safety of both workers and drivers.
Since the project began, reported delays for road users have been negligible outside typical AM and PM commuter peak congestion on the M8.
Lorries exceeding usual size limits will not be able to go in the eastbound direction between Junctions 27 and 26, but they can use the westbound lane.
Emergency vehicles will still be able to get through the area without any issues.
Shops in Hillington, such as Braehead Shopping Centre, will have festive opening hours, which can be checked on their respective websites and social media.
To minimise disruption to shoppers, any necessary slip road closures will start later in the day.
This project is being coordinated with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, the emergency services, and several councils, including Renfrewshire and Glasgow City Council, along with Braehead Shopping Centre.
Be aware that all planned work is dependent on good weather and could be rescheduled if conditions are poor.
Road users are encouraged to account for extra travel time and consider different routes when possible.
