Contractors employed by Eastbourne Borough Council completed “key” structural tests on Eastbourne Bandstand this week.
The work involved specialised load testing to assess the structure’s strength, particularly across the terraced parts of the Grade II* listed site.
The bandstand’s future is in question after it was declared to be in a “critical state” in July.

A report on its structural integrity suggested either demolition or managed decline, causing strong opposition from councillors and heritage groups.
In September, council officers recommended that proposals to demolish “structurally unsound” elements of the bandstand – such as degraded columns and beams – go ahead as planned.
However, Eastbourne Borough Council deferred the decision pending a response from heritage body Historic England, who will conduct their own survey into the state of the bandstand.
Eastbourne Borough Council says it is committed to ensuring the venue can reopen in time for the 2026 summer season.

The council said that this week’s testing was undertaken as part of their commitment to “balancing public safety with the long-term preservation of the much-loved attraction.”
Councillor Stephen Holt, Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, said: “I am very pleased that the load testing is now complete and we look forward to receiving the results in the New Year.
“These are specialised tests and will be absolutely crucial in informing our conservation architects and structural engineers on the next steps needed to safely secure and preserve this iconic landmark.”

The council is working in partnership with Historic England over plans to deliver a long-term heritage-led solution for the venue.
Councillor Holt added: “We understand how much the Bandstand means to our community and visitors and are fully committed to working with partners to deliver a solution so that it can continue to operate safely and stay a popular attraction for many years to come.”
Further details on plans will be announced once the results of the load testing have been fully analysed.
