Christmas shoppers are advised to “be alert” this festive season
Police have issued a warning and advice to shoppers following multiple reported distraction thefts of cash in Canterbury city centre.
On the morning of Tuesday, November 25, a man in his 70s withdrew money from a cash machine in the city centre before heading to St George’s Street.
While in the Marks and Spencer store, he was approached by a man and a woman who allegedly told him that he had something stuck to the back of his coat.
After removing his coat, the man and woman left the scene and the victim later realised that the quantity of cash was missing.
Two days later, a woman in her 70s was also suspected to have been targeted while in her silver Fiesta in St Alphege Lane at around 1pm.
A handbag which contained a quantity of recently withdrawn cash was inside of the car when a woman in the street caught her attention by pointing to something in the road.
The driver got out of her car and the second woman left the area shortly afterwards. The withdrawn money was later found to be missing from the handbag.
Police are currently investigating both incidents. Anyone with relevant information that may be able to assist their enquiries into these two cases, including CCTV or dashcam, should contact Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting 46/203059/25.
PC Jamie Nash said: “With the festive period almost upon us, shoppers may be carrying more cash than usual. It’s important to be aware of who is around you when you are out and about, and to keep money safely stashed away.
“If a stranger bumps into you, or approaches you and starts to ask questions, or behaves in an unusual manner, be alert. It may be a deliberate distraction to allow them to steal your property.
“Ensure that cash and valuables are safely secured and out of sight. If you do have to visit a bank to withdraw money, make sure you are vigilant. If you are concerned, consider asking a friend or family member to come with you.”
