The Met Office said East Sussex, Kent, Surrey and West Sussex could expect fog on the morning of Friday, December 5, and warned there is a chance of flight delays or cancellations
South East England has been issued a “yellow” level fog warning as travellers are told to expect slower journey times and the possibility of flight delays.
The Met Office said Kent, East Sussex, Surrey and West Sussex could expect foggy weather conditions on the morning of Friday, December 5.
London and South East England were expected to be largely dry and clear on Thursday, with a widespread frost developing and patchy freezing fog. A minimum temperature -3C was forecast overnight.
Moving into Friday, the morning is expected to be dry, with bright or sunny spells once early patchy freezing fog clears. A maximum temperature 9C is expected.
“Freezing fog is expected to develop across parts of southeast England on Thursday night before clearing on Friday morning. Visibility could fall below 100 metres in places,” the forecaster said.
“Areas of freezing fog may lead to some delays to travel on Friday morning.”
The Met Office said slower journey times with delays to bus and train services are possible, while there is a chance of delays or cancellations to flights.
The major airports servicing the region include: London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, London Luton, London City and London Southend.
The forecaster said fog, snow, ice and crosswinds force air traffic controllers to increase the gap between planes that are landing, reducing the number of aircrafts that an airport can manage.
This weather can also make it slower and more challenging for planes to taxi between the runway and terminal buildings.
Road users were told to give themselves the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions, leaving extra journey time or amending plans if necessary.
They have also been told to turn on fog lights.
