The Lewes Tourist Information Centre (TIC) shut in 2024 to allow for refurbishments, but has not reopened, with no reasons given, the volunteers claim.
The only tourist information point is a table at the Lewes District Council helpdesk, which also houses the Citizens Advice counter.
Frustrated volunteers have now offered to run the centre themselves on Saturdays, with activities including chatting to visitors, sharing information, handing out maps and leaflets, showcasing local artists and community activities, and leading guided walks.
Lewes town councillor Edwina Livesey said: “Lewes is full of amazing, friendly, knowledgeable people, and around 50 of us signed up to help get the TIC (Tourist Information Centre) open on Saturdays.
“I have written to Lewes District Council a number of times offering help with volunteering and asking to meet, and telling them about this generous offer by Lewes residents to make their own agreed plans actually work.
“They now need to show willingness to meet with us and get these plans off the ground.
“We want to get our fantastic building open again – please just give us the keys.”
This concern is echoed by several councillors and local groups.
Town and district councillor Janet Baah said: “This situation is completely unacceptable.
“Our most vulnerable residents, struggling to put food on the table or needing debt advice, or asking for help with housing or black mould, are being asked to stand in the same small space as tourists enquiring about a luxury mini-break or the best place to get local Champagne.
“It is an appalling way to treat our residents.”
The Friends of Lewes, a local group, shared similar sentiments.
They recently wrote an open letter to Lee Banner, the director of tourism and place at the district council, reminding him that the residents see the tourist information centre as “crucial for tourism, community engagement, and promoting local heritage/events.
“The Friends of Lewes are strongly of the view that the TIC should be reinstated at 187 as soon as possible,” they said.
Lib Dem town councillor Kevin West said: “LDC need to stop making endless excuses, and restore the tourist information centre to its proper home at 187 High Street now.”
