Arno Engels, 39, has been charged with the murder of Anthony Scarrott, 80.
Mr Scarrott was found with serious injuries at an address in Westcourt Road, Worthing, on September 11 at 8.20pm and was taken to hospital
Engels, of no fixed address, was initially arrested on suspicion of assault and released on bail pending further enquiries.
Mr Scarrott died in hospital on September 14.
Engels was then arrested on suspicion of murder and subsequently charged.
He and the victim were known to each other.
Engels appeared at Lewes Crown Court today, September 19.
He sat in the dock wearing a grey sweatshirt and trousers and spoke only to confirm his name.
The prosecution revealed that Engels and Mr Scarrott “resided together” at a flat.
Engels did not enter a plea. A provisional trial date was set for March 9 next year.
He is due to appear in court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on December 5.
He was remanded into custody.
