British Transport Police has reported “several incidents” of people being approached by a man or woman asking them to withdraw cash, under the guise of being stranded or having had their card stolen.
The person promises to return the money via bank transfer however this does not occur.
People have been warned not to withdraw money if approached by people in these circumstances.
A crime prevention notice has been taped to Budgens in Queens Road, next to Brighton Station.
A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: “Officers received reports in July and August 2025 of a woman committing fraud at Brighton railway station, asking commuters to go to cash machines to take out money.
“Enquiries into these incidents are ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 1210 of August 25.”
