Today, August 28, people armed with ladders took to Brighton city centre.
Pictures show St George’s flags and Union Jacks attached to lampposts in West Street.
They have also been attached to Ikea signs outside Churchill Square.
They were raised on the A259 between Rottingdean and Peacehaven last week.
Brighton and Hove City Council said the flags would be removed in line with the 1980 Highway Act.
However, Councillor Bridget Fishleigh, for Rottingdean and West Saltdean, reported that contractors faced verbal abuse while removing them and new ones had been put up.
Brighton and Hove City Council leader Bella Sankey also thanked environmental services operatives for restoring a pedestrian crossing after a St George’s flag was painted on it.
It comes amid protests over hotels housing asylum seekers, some of which took place near Crawley and in Chichester.
Brighton and Hove City Council has been approached for comment.
