Charlie Southall, owner of the Montreal Arms in Albion Hill, Brighton, was ordered to repair or replace the tiles which were taken off by workers in March 2022.
Brighton and Hove City Council issued an enforcement notice following the incident, requiring the tiles to be replaced by July 2024.
Southall first appeared in court over the saga last month.
Today, August 18, he has pleaded not guilty to being in breach of an enforcement notice issued by the council.
Southall also requested that the case be transferred to crown court due to “complex legal and factual issues”.
The prosecutor for Brighton and Hove City Council, Edward-Arash Abedian, said: “The property was formerly used as a pub.
“The enforcement notice requires the cessation of the removal of ceramic tiles.
“There has been a long running back and forth. It’s all about the removal of tiles.”
Southall stated that the dispute rather involved the “reinstatement of the tiles”.
The magistrates ruled that the case would be sent to crown court.
Southall is due to appear at Lewes Crown Court on September 15.
