East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident in Ashton Rise, Brighton, yesterday, August 14, shortly after 10am.
One person was taken to hospital.
SGN engineers found that an unlit gas hob had been left on.
The block of flats was evacuated and a property was ventilated.
Residents have since been allowed to return.
Simon Collins, spokesman for SGN, said: “We responded to reports of a gas leak in the communal area of a block of flats in Ashton Rise.
“Our engineers carried out a series of investigations and found substantial gas readings in one property. We gained access to this property and found a gas hob had been left on, unlit.
“As a result, the flats were evacuated as a precaution, and the property was ventilated. Once it was safe to do so, evacuated residents were allowed to reoccupy their homes.”
A spokeswoman for Secamb said: “South East Coast Ambulance Service was called by East Sussex Fire and Rescue to reports of a gas leak shortly after 10.50am yesterday, August 14, at Ashton Rise, Brighton.
“Ambulance crews assessed and treated one patient on scene before taking them to Royal Sussex County Hospital for further medical treatment.”
