Photographs show work underway to tear down the remaining structure, which was used as workshops, in Ryde Road in Brighton.

Neighbours spoke of their shock after waking up to the scene on July 27, which one person described as being one of “devastation”.

(Image: EDDIE MITCHELL) Firefighters were called just after 8am and stayed for two hours to ensure the public’s safety. No casualties were reported.

Phillip Kelly, who lives in nearby Hartington Road, said the collapse of the building sounded like a “clap of thunder” and expressed his concerns about sitting in his garden with the roof looming over his out house.

Another neighbour greeted firefighters in Ryde Road to show them where the collapse had happened.

“My dog was in the garden and came bolting in,” he said.

The man said he had heard a “loud long groaning sound”, similar, he said, to an aeroplane’s thrusters, and when he walked outside he saw that the roof had caved in.

“There was a massive plume of dust,” he said.

“It was quite devastating.”

Residents in Carisbrooke Road, another road which overlooks the scene, said the building was old but that they were not expecting it to collapse.

“There was a really big noise in the morning,” one resident said.

“It was a shock.”

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said at the time: “Three fire engines and three officers were in attendance at Ryde Road, Brighton, responding to a building collapse.

“Firefighters remained on scene between 8.04am and 10.15am to ensure public safety.”
