Armed police descended on George Street in Hove after a man entered Nationwide with a knife and imitation firearm.
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “Police responded to an incident at Nationwide building society in George Street, Hove on Friday (4 July) at 12.35pm
“A 27-year-old man was arrested for possession of an imitation firearm and a knife, which were both in a bag.
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
An eyewitness said: “A large crowd watched as police arrested him and put him in the car. You could see the knife in a forensics bag.
“People were clapping and cheering and saying ‘yes you caught the bank robber’.”
