Ebbsfleet have landed a major transfer coup after signing a former Gillingham captain.

The Fleet have secured the services of Max Ehmer after he left Priestfield at the end of last season.

The 33-year-old played 439 times for the Gills and is the sixth-highest appearance-maker in their history.

But he’s now dropped down to National League South with Ebbsfleet, having played alongside his new boss Josh Wright at Gillingham.

“It does feel exciting and I’m looking forward to experiencing new things and making sure I play well,” said Ehmer.

“Ebbsfleet aren’t in the league we want to be in and with what’s going on around the place with the plans here, and with Josh Wright as manager, it’s all something I want to be part of.

“The players brought in are all strong additions and we’re here to get promoted, that’s the end game.”

The German defender first joined the Gills in November 2014, signed on loan from QPR. He made the move permanent ahead of the following season.

He spent a season away during the 2020/21 campaign after a move to Bristol Rovers but joined again in 2021, often captaining the side.

Ehmer didn’t feature for the Gills once Gareth Ainsworth took charge of the team in March having lost the captaincy to Armani Little under former boss John Coleman.

Ehmer’s arrival is the 11th new signing at Stonebridge Road this summer, with midfielder Gene Kennedy making the move earlier this week after featuring at Welling United last season.

Wright has also signed keeper Gio Bellagambi, Finlay Barnes, Kwesi Appiah, Lennon Peake, Jamie Fielding, Jake Hessenthaler, Ronny Nelson, Charlie Seaman and Ben Coker as they seek an immediate return to the National League following last season’s relegation.
