The Verdict Jazz Club, in Edward Street, Brighton, will host the pan-European quintet Red Kite on Friday, June 27 and the Tony Remy Trio on Saturday, June 28.
The London Jazz News described Red Kite as having “an abundance of beauty and originality,” with a mix of “serene melodies” and “subtle arrangements” allowing for improvisation.
The quintet’s acoustic modern jazz sound is inflected with electronic elements, creating a cinematic undertone.
The strong rhythm section, including Jasper Høiby and Marc Michel, provides a solid base for both composition and improvisation.
The group’s repertoire ranges from noir ballads to upbeat tunes, reminiscent of Miles Davis and Arve Henriksen.
The quintet released the album “Theory of Colours,” and were invited to play at the European showcase at Jazzahead in Bremen in 2021.
They have a new album set for release this autumn on the German label Berthold Records.
Tony Remy, known for his hard-edged, rhythmically driven guitar playing enriched with jazz intuition and bluesy soul, is returning after his sell-out show in 2024.
The trio also features Anders Olinder on the Hammond organ and Tristan Banks on drums.
Remy’s career began in 1986, and he quickly became a sought-after session player, contributing to albums by London Jazz alumni such as Cleveland Watkiss, Jason Rebello, and Steve Williamson.
He released his first solo album, “BOOF,” in 1993 on the American Jazz-Fusion label GRP, which received excellent reviews.
In 1997, Remy released his second album, “Metamorfollow-G,” on his own label, Alltone Records, allowing his playing to stretch out even further.
Remy has toured and recorded with a roster of artists that reads like a ‘who’s who’ of quality musicians, from Annie Lennox and Jack Bruce to Herbie Hancock and the Jazz Crusaders.
He co-wrote and produced Sarah-Jane Morris’s 2014 album, “Bloody Rain,” which was toured around Europe and the UK.
He also played with the legendary Jack Bruce as part of his Big Blues Band, performing worldwide for several years.
Remy continues to play guitar, with a near non-stop touring schedule, and is currently putting the finishing touches to his forthcoming album, “In the Middle of Before and After.”
The album, featuring a stellar line-up of musicians, is expected to please both fans and those yet to discover Remy’s talents.
Both performances at The Verdict Jazz Club start at 8.30pm, with general admission priced at £25 and concessions at £17.50.
