Dozens of supporters with placards turned out this evening (June 23) and chanted ‘free Palestine’ as speeches were given via a megaphone.

Police were present and were monitoring the situation.

Several of those in attendance were holding placards from the Socialist Worker, a left-wing publication run by the Socialist Workers Party.

Slogans on these placards included “Starmer has blood on his hands. Free Palestine” while others displayed a controversial phrase deemed by some as being antisemitic.

There was also a sign saying “Stop War in Iran”, in reference to the Donald Trump administration’s bombings of key nuclear sites in Iran over the weekend and possible Iranian retaliation.

This is one of several pro-Palestinian demonstrations which have happened in recent months in Brighton in the wake of escalating conflict in Gaza.

One of the most notable was a march through the city centre which brought Brighton to a standstill in May.

The march, organised by Brighton and Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign, began at The Level.

It then moved down London Road, onto the Royal Pavilion and up North Street and onto Western Road – ending finally at Hove Peace Statue.

The march was to mark the 77th anniversary of the 1948 Nakba.

“Nakba” or “catastrophe” refers to the forced removal of an estimated 750,000 Palestinians from their homes when Israel was founded after the Second World War.
