The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued the warning for tomorrow, June 18, from 12pm until Sunday, June 22, at 6pm across Sussex.
The alert means that significant impacts are possible across health and social care services, including:
- A rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions
- A likely increase in demand for health services
- Internal temperatures in care settings (hospitals and care homes) may exceed the recommended threshold for clinical risk assessment
- The heat affecting the ability of the workforce to deliver services
- Indoor environments overheating increasing the risk to vulnerable people living independently in community and care settings
The UKHSA advises people to keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm, and check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell.

Those outside should cover up with suitable clothing such as an appropriate hat and sunglasses, seek shade and apply sunscreen.
People should also drink plenty of fluids and limit alcohol intake.
According to the Met Office, Brighton can expect highs of around 25/26°C throughout the week, reaching as high as 27°C on Saturday – making it hotter than the Spanish Balearic island of Ibiza.
