Gillingham have reached an agreement to extend defender Max Clark’s contract.

The left-back’s previous deal expired this summer, having spent the past two seasons with the Gills. He has signed a new one-year contract.

He was one of four players offered new terms and becomes the second to put pen to paper following Bradley Dack’s decision to stay on for another season.

“I am really pleased to be staying at Gills,” said the defender.

“I have very much enjoyed my time here, the fans are absolutely brilliant and I want to be a part of what the club is building.

“I am looking forward to the season ahead.”

Clark, 29, joined the Gills ahead of the 2023/24 season from Stevenage, where he had been part of a successful promotion-winning team.

In his first year with the club he had competition from Scott Malone for the left-back role and that limited him to 28 appearances.

He started the 24/25 campaign as the first-choice left-back and retained his position until John Coleman opted to make a change, initially leaving Clark out before reinstating him to the defensive line-up.

Gareth Ainsworth started Clark in all nine of his games and was keen to have him onboard again for the coming season.

Clark took over penalty duties under Ainsworth and scored in subsequent games against Harrogate and Colchester United from the penalty spot, having also hit a 90th minute equaliser at Accrington.
