The Money Saving Expert warned that Council Tax debt should be considered the “priority debt” for people who are struggling.

Mr Lewis was speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain this morning (Wednesday, May 14) and had earlier alerted people on social media of the discussion.

On X, formerly Twitter, he described Council Tax Debt collection as “arguably the worst form of legal debt collection, as they have power to escalate so quickly.”

On Good Morning Britain, the Money Saving Expert said: “As much as it sticks to the craw to say this, your council tax debt is the priority debt.

“That is the letter you do not ignore.

“It is the letter when you get that you need to act and act urgently and if you can’t afford to pay it go to one of the non-profit agencies whether that is money helpers or Citizens Advice – before you get to the bailiff stage.

“A letter from the council demanding debt should have a big warning sign on it.

“If bailiffs come to your door do not let them in. Make sure all your stuff is locked up. Speak to one of the debt counselling agencies about what help you need.

“There are, certainly on council tax, certain things down the line if they get in extra orders where they can force entry, but not in the first instance. And go and talk to the local council”

However, Mr Lewis added that there was no “easy solution” and it “is not going to work for everyone.”

He said: “The rules are wrong. The rules are unjust.

“There is not enough protection for people out there, and it is damaging to constituents and damaging for councils.”
