Two men from Liverpool have been charged after an alleged attempted robbery at a village supermarket.

One suspect reportedly leapt behind the counter, smashing a protective plastic screen, while another locked the back door of the Morrisons Daily in New Ash Green.

The attempted robbery is said to have happened at New Ash Green Shopping Centre

The pair are said to have entered the shop in The Row together, wearing balaclavas, before fleeing empty-handed when an alarm was triggered.

It is also reported they made threats to a member of staff for money during the alleged incident on April 24 at 2.30pm.

Initial inquiries by police led to the arrest of a man with the help of officers from Merseyside Police.

Liam Whyte, 34, of Queens Drive in Stoneycroft, Liverpool, was later charged on Sunday (April 27) with attempted robbery and appeared at Knowsley Magistrates’ Court, in Liverpool, the next day.

Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of a second man three days later.

Frank Phillips, 44, of Harrogate Drive in Liverpool, was also charged with attempted robbery and appeared at Knowsley Magistrates’ Court on yesterday (April 30).

The pair will appear at Maidstone Crown Court

Both men have been remanded pending a hearing at Maidstone Crown Court on May 27.

However, investigations are ongoing to find a possible third suspect.

Residents with private CCTV or drivers with dashcam, who may have been in the area at the time of the incident, are also asked to check for footage.
