Repair work on a bridge in Cardiff set to cause major disruptions and misery
Train services are set to face yet more disruption this weekend, lasting until late on Sunday following urgent bridge repair work between Cardiff Central station and Queen Street station in the capital. The affected section has already caused misery for commuters for over a week.
Numerous train journeys have been cancelled or suspended in South Wales, despite the fact that work on the affected section of the network was meant to only last a few days. Several key routes are impacted, including those between Cardiff Central and Manchester Piccadilly, Pontypridd, Ebbw Vale Town, and Swansea.
National Rail has reported that extensive repairs have allowed mainline services between Newport and Cardiff to “largely open”. Despite this progress, the bridge work is ongoing, with service alterations expected to persist until Sunday.
The affected services include:
– Delays and cancellations for trains heading to or from Ebbw Vale Town.
– Termination of trains between Maesteg and Ebbw Vale Town at Cardiff Central. To stay updated on Cardiff news, sign up for our daily newsletter here.
– Passengers can transfer at Cardiff Central for alternative services to Newport, as trains are operating between Newport and Ebbw Vale Town.
– There are no train services running in either direction between Pontypridd and Cardiff Bay.
– A reduced service is functioning between Cardiff Central and Merthyr Tydfil / Aberdare / Treherbert.
– These services will be rerouted via Radyr and will not stop at Llandaff, Cathays, or Cardiff Queen Street.
– Replacement bus services are running between Caerphilly and Cardiff Central, departing every 30 minutes and taking longer than the usual train journey.
Passengers can use their train tickets at no additional charge on the following bus services:.
