Chocolate fans have expressed their dismay at the news Toblerone has discontinued one of its popular products. Mondelez, the parent company of Toblerone, has announced that it has officially stopped making the Toblerone Dark bars.

The product has been on the market for more than 50 years, with some describing it as the “best” available. The decision has left fans of the product dejected. The company acknowledged that the move might be “disappointing for some consumers”, yet the widespread response on social media during this Easter period suggests a more significant discontent.

On Facebook, a fan lamented: “Dark chocolate version is the best!” Another posted: “I only like dark chocolate …Why are they discontinuing it? It is less sweet and healthier. Well, another good thing gone.”

Introduced in 1969, Toblerone Dark has delighted chocolate lovers for over five decades. In its storied history, a critic praised the bar, saying: “This is possibly the best chocolate, if you can eat almonds and nougat with dark chocolate,” reports the Mirror.

The decision by Mondelez, an American conglomerate that kept the iconic Swiss chocolate brand after original owner Kraft restructured into Mondelez in 2012, has left many shoppers perplexed.

One shared their mother’s disappointment online: “My mum adores these!” While another remarked: “Dreadful news, I enjoy these.”

A spokesperson for Mondelez, the confectionery behemoth based in Chicago, Illinois, expressed: “While we understand that this may be disappointing for some consumers, we continue to invest in Toblerone.”

Mondelez didn’t elaborate on the the rationale behind their latest decision. The company, famous for acquiring Cadbury’s, has a presence in over 150 countries.

However, it remains uncertain whether Toblerone Dark faces discontinuation globally or solely within the UK market.

Invented in Switzerland by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann back in 1908, the name Toblerone cleverly merges “Tobler” with “Torrone,” Italian for honey-almond nougat.

Last year witnessed the brand’s halt in using the illustrious Swiss Matterhorn mountain image in its packaging. This change occurred as the company pivoted production from Switzerland to Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital.

Switzerland’s Swissness Act—which requires national symbols and Swiss crosses on product packaging to reflect true Swiss origin—prohibited this branding.

Passed in 2017, the legislation mandates that at least 80% of non-milk raw materials in “Swiss made” edibles originate from Switzerland, while milk and dairy product ingredients need to be entirely Swiss-sourced.

As Toblerone’s production shifted abroad, the tagline “of Switzerland” was substituted for “established in Switzerland” to comply with these regulations.
