The London Borough of Bromley has given notice of its intention to stop up a section of land at Pike Close.
This means the land will cease to be a public highway.
This is to allow for the demolition of existing buildings and the phased redevelopment of the site.
The plans, which were given the go-ahead by Bromley Council in 2021, are to construct 170 residential units in buildings ranging from two to 13 storeys in height.
There will also be associated landscaping, car and cycle parking, and ancillary development.
These plans will be carried out in accordance with planning permission granted under reference DC/21/03622/FULL1.
The proposed stopping-up of the land is subject to an order that the borough intends to make under section 247 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
The London Borough of Bromley has called for any objections to the proposed stopping-up to be made within a period of 28 days, beginning on April 9, 2025.
The objections should be addressed to the director of Environment and Public Protection, London Borough of Bromley, at Bromley Civic Centre, Churchill Court, 2 Westmoreland Road, Bromley, BR1 1AS, quoting reference NR STO/104.
The notice, signed by Tasnim Shawkat, director of corporate services and governance for the London Borough of Bromley, also states that the substance of any objection may be shared with other persons who may be affected by it, and these persons may wish to communicate with the objector about it.
The draft order and relevant plan can be inspected by making an email request to highway.planning@bromley.gov.uk.
The planned redevelopment will transform the existing car park site on Croft Avenue.
The project is part of the borough’s efforts to address the growing demand for housing.
The plans aim to create a modern, residential environment with supporting facilities.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service previously reported in January 2023 that locals voiced concerns over how long it will take to build the new homes, with council documents saying the construction will last over ten years. One resident called the time frame “ludicrous”.
Mr Shallice said: “To put in place such a time scale, a tenth of a century without accounting for the impact on residents is staggering and cannot be allowed.
“The noise, the pollution, the inconvenience would be astronomical and has not been considered at all.”
One neighbour said: “Beckenham (and Bromley as a whole) is in need of more and better affordable homes and I believe this redevelopment will bring genuinely affordable and quality housing for current Beckenham residents.”
Another resident said they had been a tenant in the estate since 1988, and were looking forward to moving into a brand new flat.
Mike Woolliscroft, London Divisional Chair for Vistry Group, said: “Having worked tirelessly with residents, the council and wider community on the redevelopment plans for Calverley Close and Pike “Close, we are excited to celebrate the significant progress we are making in bringing these visions to life.
“In partnership with Riverside, we are providing every existing tenant with a high-quality, energy-efficient new home as well as delivering additional homes for private sale to meet the considerable need for housing in the area.”
