Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team was paged to Itchenor, near Chichester Harbour, after reports of a vessel on fire with two adults and a child on board on April 15.

Chichester Harbour Patrol, Hayling Lifeboat and the fire service also attended.

The vessel was towed to Itchenor jetty and handed over to Selsey Coastguard, where it was checked over by firefighters to ensure the fire was out.

Littlehampton Coastguard Team, Littlehampton Lifeboat, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Sussex Police and the ambulance service also responded.

Selsey Coastguard was stood down as the incident was under control.

At 8.30pm, the crew was called out again, this time to Marine Walk, Hayling Island, after reports of three casualties stuck in the mud.

Hayling Coastguard Team, Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team, Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 175, the fire service, the ambulance service and the coastguard’s Hazard Assessment and Response Team were all tasked alongside Selsey Coastguard to assist.

(Image: Selsey Coastguard) Mud technicians from Selsey and Portsmouth Mud Rescue Teams were deployed onto the mud and the casualties were winched off the mud and recovered to safety by the Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 175.

Hayling Coastguard Team set up a helicopter landing site outside its coastguard station where Rescue 175 landed and the casualties were taken into the station to be checked over.

A spokesman from Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said: “A special thank you to the residents on Marine Walk who allowed emergency vehicles to park and turn around on their drives.

“This incident shows the huge importance of all emergency assets being able to work together to save lives.

“In an emergency out at sea, on the beach or along the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
