Erin Ferguson, 21, is taking part in the Miss Sussex 2025 competition and has since gained a place in this year’s final.
Originally from Northern Ireland, the University of Sussex law student entered the contest looking to gain some self-confidence, after breaking her nose when playing rugby.
She told The Argus: “In about December time I broke my nose. It meant I was going to be out of rugby for a while. I needed something to do.
“My nose was also making me feel a little self-conscious and I wanted something to bring that self-confidence back. So, I applied for the contest. It’s just been amazing, I never thought it’d be something I would do.”
Erin explained how pageants are very different to many people’s typical perception, with a large focus on community and charity work.
She said: “Pageants are now nothing to do with who’s most gorgeous. The competition’s main values are women empowerment, about women that have always wanted to do something out of their shell.
“I want to step forward for what I believe in. I want people to know who Erin is, not what I look like.”

She is also an ambassador for period poverty, working with the YMCA to help supply period packs to those in need.
Erin also opened up about her own struggles, living with endometriosis and dyslexia.
She said: “Struggles to strength is what I advocate for. I’ve made videos and been on podcasts talking about things like my dyslexia and how I cope with that. I hope to inspire other girls. It’s just so great to share, even the tiny things.”
Erin told of the impact the competition has had on her.
“I feel like since entering the competition my confidence is through the roof. I’ve met lots of lovely girls and made a brand-new friendship group,” she added.
“When I left rugby, it felt very isolating and seeing people socially was just not the same. With this opportunity I’ve met so many amazing women and it’s not even about winning, it’s taking part and getting to know all these people.”
The final stage will involve several rounds including a speech to the judges, a fashionwear round and eveningwear round.
The final is due to take place on June 22 at the Eastwell Manor House in Kent and tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite.
