If you hurry, you may still be in time to grab a free bus ride.

Bus operator Stagecoach is giving away 5,000 free bus rides on its south east network this month, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The firm’s managing director, Joel Mitchell, said the initiative was “possibly the most massive giveaway of free travel that any commercial transport provider has ever done”.

Mr Mitchell said the giveway was an invitation for people to try the bus, in the hope that it would “build back trust after a tough time for bus transport in recent years”.

Passenger numbers on Britain’s buses are still lower than before the pandemic, but Stagecoach believes it may be turning a corner.

Mr Mitchell said: “We’ve faced some huge challenges that have affected our ability to deliver the quality of service that we know our communities deserve, but currently our punctuality is at a two-year high and cancelled bus journeys are at their lowest level for 18 months.”

“This giveaway is our way to say thank you for bearing with us and to give something back to the community. We want people to come and try the bus, and what better way to do that than to offer a free ride.”

Passengers will need to use the Stagecoach Bus App to claim their free ticket which is available to anyone using a Stagecoach bus in Kent or East Sussex.
