As part of our 145th birthday celebrations, we asked readers to share their fond memories of appearing in the paper.
Caroline Carter appeared on the cover of the then Evening Argus on August 28, 1976 with her mum Sheila while out in Castle Square in Brighton.
The beautiful black and white shot shows Caroline’s mum looking glamorous with a headscarf and mac holding hands with three-year-old Caroline whilst cowering under umbrellas.
The summer of 1976 was one of the driest, sunniest and warmest in the 20th century. In the last week of August 1976, severe thunderstorms brought rain to some places for the first time in weeks.
Caroline said: “It had been the heatwave that summer and it had started raining for the first time in weeks.
“An Argus photographer, who I think my mum knew, saw us in Castle Square and took this photo which appeared on the cover.
“You can see that my umbrella has the Wombles on it – I really loved the Wombles.
“It was quite a thing. We kept the copy and bought the photos which I still have on my wall today. It’s a really special photo to me.”
Caroline, who lives in Coldean, was born in Brighton and has lived in the city all her life. Caroline’s parents were also Sussex born and bred, and her father worked for what was then Brighton Borough Council.
“My mum passed away five years ago. Coming up to Mother’s Day, it still hits me. She was a lovely person and I have very fond memories”, she said.
“She always wore a headscarf – any bad weather and she would have a headscarf and mac on.”
