A councillor has described the trend as “alarming” as she calls for a Glasgow Women’s Safety Action Plan to be rolled out and an emergency summit held among other measures.
Statistics presented at a recent Safe Glasgow Partnership showed 357 rape crimes were recorded during 2024 to 2025 so far compared to 254 during the previous year to date. Domestic abuse crimes against women stand at 192 this year compared to 136 during the previous year.
Councillor Soryia Siddique said: “I have become aware of the latest shocking statistics, which indicates an urgent need for Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland to organise an emergency summit on violence against women and girls.
“The Scottish Government should provide targeted additional financial support to areas such as Glasgow with high levels of violence against women and girls.
“Also to help create specialist units dedicated to reduction of the level of violence against women and girls. This must be incorporated into the next Police Plan for Glasgow.”
Bailie Siddique, Labour, is presenting a motion at Glasgow’s upcoming council meeting demanding urgent action to tackle violence against women.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Guy, of Glasgow Public Protection Unit, said: “Police Scotland is committed to working with partners to help ensure that women and girls across Glasgow feel safe and supported in their communities. Tackling violence against women and girls remains a key priority, and we continue to take action every day to prevent harm, support victims and bring perpetrators to justice.
“Tackling domestic abuse is one of our most significant priorities. Understanding the underlying issues and putting effective prevention strategies in place with partners is key. Every Police Scotland officer is trained to respond to domestic incidents and recognise the full range of abusive behaviours used to control, coerce, and instil fear.”
He added: “Any increase in the number of rapes is concerning. However, our approach to sexual crime is victim-centred, and I want to reassure anyone affected that they will be fully supported by specialist officers who will carry out a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.
“We encourage anyone who experiences or witnesses unacceptable behaviour to report it to police. We remain committed to working with communities and partners to improve safety and build confidence among women and girls across Glasgow.”
