Emma McCalmont, from Brighton, discovered the 3ft multi-coloured papier mâché giraffe poking out of bins on Lorna Road.
“I work in the area so I was just parking my car when I saw it on top of the bin. I just knew immediately my boyfriend would want it, because anything with colour interests him”, Emma said.
“I asked him if he wanted it and he said absolutely, so he became ours.”
The giraffe, which had a sign reading “Help me! I need a new home” attached to it, is “well built”.
Three years after taking the giraffe home, Emma would now like to find out who made the colourful creature and why.
She said: “Some people have suggested it might have been made for a local children’s street party as the 2022 event was animal themed. Other people have suggested it was made for Pride, but I found it in March so I’m not sure.”
