Emergency services were called to The Avenue in Bevendean earlier this afternoon.
The road was blocked by police as crews worked to deal with the incident.
Sussex Police has now revealed a cyclist was seriously injured in a hit and run.
The force is appealing for witnesses.
Pictures at the scene show multiple police cars and ambulances, as well as an air ambulance.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “Police are appealing for witnesses and information after a serious collision in Brighton.
“Officers were called to The Avenue at about 2.25pm on March 18.
“The collision involved the driver of a moped travelling north and a cyclist.
“The cyclist, a 66-year-old man, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.
“The driver of the moped did not stop at the scene.
“Police are keen to trace the driver of this vehicle, any witnesses, or anyone with relevant footage of the vehicles in the area at the time, including CCTV, doorbell and dashcam footage.
“Information can be reported to Sussex Police online, quoting serial 814 of 18/03.”
A spokeswoman for Secamb said: “South East Coast Ambulance Service was called to reports of a person in need of medical attention in The Avenue, Brighton shortly after 14:20 today (18/03/25).
“Ambulance crews attended the scene and were joined at the scene by the Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex.
“The person was assessed and treated before being taken by road to Royal Sussex County Hospital in a serious condition.”
