Fatto a Mano, which has three branches in Brighton and Hove and another three in London, has found itself with literally tonnes of pineapple after promising a free pizza to anyone who brought in one of the tropical fruits.
The offer is promoting their new special Bella Disgrazia, a pineapple-topped number which plays on the controversy of adding the tropical fruit to pizza.
Despite the indignant outrage of food-proud Italians worldwide, the promotion has proven to be a hit, with the canny marketing campaign going viral on social media.
Some have even claimed they cannot find pineapples for sale in Brighton, such is the appetite for Fatto’s beautiful disgrace – or the appetite for free pizza, at the very least.
All that has left Fatto a Mano with more pointy-haired pineapples than you could shake an island’s worth of piña coladas at.
Izzy England, marketing manager at Fatto a Mano, says the restaurant was caught off guard by the deal’s popularity.
“We were expecting a lot of pineapples back,” she said, “but the success of the campaign has been unprecedented. We’ve certainly had quite a few more back than anticipated!
“We were planning to use the majority for our Bella Disgrazia pizzas, then donate any excess to food banks and charities that we have existing relationships with, like The Real Junk Food Project.
“But in the second week of the campaign, the reaction really snowballed, and we realised we needed a bigger plan!”

Izzy says the restaurant has so far donated more than a tonne of the spiky fruits to Fareshare, who have in turn distributed them amongst the many charities and food banks they support, including Littlehampton Community Fridge, Bevendean Foodbank, and William Collier House YMCA.
With the deal still having a fair way left to run, Fatto a Mano are not expecting the fruity deluge to end anytime soon, and are open to any suggestions about how to continue sharing the surplus around.

Izzy said: “A lovely regular of ours mentioned that her dad runs the weekly food bank at the Holland Road Baptist Church just down the road from our Hove pizzeria, so she took a load away for them to make some delicious desserts with.
“We’re continuing to have a lot of fun with the campaign and we’re so pleased that we can use the pineapples for good.”
The Bella Disgrazia pizza is available until March 30.
