He said: “In this job, you have to take it off quite a lot. I actually lost my wedding ring.

“It wasn’t expensive anyway and I’ve got about 20 of these rubber ones. If you lose them, it’s fine.

“My wife and I got matching tattoos and I feel like that’s my wedding ring. It’s the only one I’ve got and the only one I will get.”

The actor also provided an update on the return of the much-loved BBC drama, Line of Duty, in which he stars alongside Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar.

He said: “We’re very aware of getting people’s hopes up. You have to wait to hear it from me, Vicky, Adrian or most importantly, show creator Jed.

“I think it does so well because we don’t come back just for the sake of it, Jed only comes back when he thinks there’s a story to tell.

“I’m sure he’s got something somewhere.”
