About Samantha-Jane Agbontaen

I founded House Designer in 2020 to transform how interior and garden design is delivered, using technology to make professional design more accessible, affordable, and efficient. As a creative entrepreneur with strong business acumen, I have always sought innovative ways to bridge the gap between design and technology. House Designer was built on the belief that great design should not be limited to those with large budgets or industry connections.

One of the biggest advantages in building this business has been my ability to self-learn and adapt. While my background was not in web development, I had a self-taught knowledge of coding before launching House Designer and have since honed my technical skills to develop and improve our online platform. This has been a superpower, allowing me to refine the user experience, integrate digital tools, and scale the business efficiently without relying solely on external developers. I am still learning and evolving as we grow, embracing technology as a tool for transformation.

The idea for House Designer came from recognising a gap in the market. Many people wanted professional design services but found traditional firms expensive, slow, and inaccessible. By leveraging technology, I created an online platform that streamlines the design process, allowing clients to receive expert interior and garden designs remotely. This not only lowers costs but also democratises access to professional design.

As a woman in both tech and design, two industries where female founders are underrepresented, breaking into the space came with challenges. Gaining credibility in a male-dominated tech sector and disrupting the traditional design model required resilience. Educating clients on the value of online design services meant overcoming long-standing perceptions and proving that digital platforms can offer the same (if not better) results as conventional firms.

Scaling a tech-enabled business also required continuous refinement. I had to improve automation processes, integrate AI tools for 3D visualisation, and ensure a seamless digital experience. Unlike traditional design firms, House Designer operates with a tech-first mindset, using digital tools to enhance efficiency, improve collaboration, and make professional design more attainable.

This year, my focus is on expanding House Designer’s tech capabilities while pushing for greater sustainability. I am developing more AI-powered design solutions and virtual walk-through experiences, allowing clients to engage with their designs interactively before making final decisions. Sustainability is also at the core of our next phase, integrating eco-conscious materials and design strategies that align with the growing demand for greener living.

I strongly believe in lifelong learning and continuously pushing my own limits. This is why I am currently pursuing an MBA, sharpening my leadership skills and deepening my understanding of business strategy, finance, and innovation.

As a woman in tech, I am passionate about encouraging more women to step into leadership roles in this space. Through House Designer, I want to show that tech-driven businesses are not just for Silicon Valley startups but can redefine industries like home design, making them more efficient, accessible, and sustainable.
