A company named Signicat gathered information from 1206 fraud managers working in banks, fintech businesses, and payment platforms. The study is named The Battle Against AI-Driven Identity Fraud. Findings reveal that deepfakes have moved from a minor nuisance to a core threat.
This survey reached seven European nations: the UK, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden. Participants pointed out that AI-driven identity theft accounts for 42.5% of attempts in the financial sector. Three years ago, deepfakes were barely an issue, and now they rank high among digital cons.
Signicat’s work shows that account takeovers lead the way, closely followed by card fraud and phishing. The presence of deepfake schemes has soared, raising alarm among those who defend online banking and payment apps. Traditional tools often fail to spot illusions that look and sound genuine.

Biometric checks, such as face mapping or voice authentication, can detect small mismatches in micro-expressions. Some firms add random prompts, like blinking or speaking numbers, as extra proof. These measures increase the chance of spotting synthetic footage.
