More than 100 people danced Strip the Willow on Sauchiehall Street on Saturday afternoon as part of Glasgow’s 850th birthday celebrations.
The event was initially scheduled to take place on January 25 – in partnership with the Celtic Connections festival – but was postponed due to bad weather caused by Storm Eowyn.
The event was MC’d by Royal Conservatoire of Scotland traditional music student Ruairidh Gray, who has quickly grown in popularity on social media platforms.
There were also two Highland Dancers – Caragh MacKinnon and Maria Monk – who performed to the crowd alongside pipers from the National Piping Centre, who then played as the crowd danced.
Karen Shaw, project manager at Sauchiehall Street, said it was apt that the crowd was performing Strip the Willow on “a street known for its dancing”.
Sauchiehall Street means “willow meadow”, reflecting its past as a moorland lined with willow trees.
