Charlie Chaplin
Walworth, Southwark
Regarded as one of the greatest comic geniuses in cinema history, Charlie Chaplin was born in 1889 in Walworth, south London.
Chaplin had a comfortable early life, though his parents, both performers, separated after his birth.
His natural comedic talent flourished, and he went on to become a global icon in the world of film, creating unforgettable roles as “The Tramp.”
David Bowie
Brixton, Bromley, Beckenham (+ more)
The incomparable David Bowie—also known as Ziggy Stardust—was born in Brixton, but his influence spread far and wide across south east London.
Bowie attended Stockwell Infants’ School and briefly studied at Croydon Art School.
He also lived in Haddon Hall, Beckenham, and recorded his groundbreaking album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust in Greenwich.
Widely considered one of the greatest musicians of all time, Bowie left a lasting legacy in the music world, making his mark in South East London for much of his life.
Gemma Arterton
Gravesend, Kent
Bond girl Gemma Arterton was born in Gravesend, Kent, and attended Gravesend Grammar School for Girls.
She hit the big screen in 2007 with St Trinian’s, and since then, has starred in films ranging from Hollywood blockbusters like Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans to British comedies such as Tamara Drewe and Song for Marion.
