Gillingham have strengthened their defence with the loan signing of Hull City’s Andy Smith.
The Gills made several enquiries for centre-halves during the window, including a couple in Scotland, but have now landed 23-year-old Smith on a deal until the end of the season.
Speaking to the Gills’ media team, Smith said: “I am delighted, once I knew there was interest it was something I wanted to be a part of.
“I am here to work hard and play as many games as I can.
“I like to be aggressive, on the front foot, and I’ll do everything for the boys around me and for the club.”
Smith started his career at Hull, joining their under-9s and progressing through the youth ranks where he went onto captain the under-18s, but most of his first-team experience has come through loans away from the club.
He started the 2021/22 season at Salford City but moved to Grimsby Town in the National League for the second half of the season and helped them win promotion to the EFL through the play-offs.
Smith spent the whole of the next season on loan at Grimsby in League 2.
His one and only league appearance for Hull came in December 2023, coming on as a late substitute against Cardiff City.
The second half of the season was spent on loan at Cheltenham Town.
His only senior appearance this season came for Hull in their League Cup game against Sheffield Wednesday in August.
Hull City, meanwhile, have signed former Gills defender John Egan on a permanent deal from Burnley.
