On Wednesday, the rail operator launched the “Tap&Pay” app, which allows customers to travel without paying for tickets in advance.
The new system works similarly to the Tube network in London – customers would simply “tap on” at the station they depart from and “tap off” at their destination with a single-use barcode which logs their location.

At the end of the journey, the app will automatically calculate and charge the best available fare based on the journey made and time of travel.
Those who make multiple trips on the same route over a week will never pay more than the cost of a weekly season ticket.

The app will also take into account any railcard discounts – although customers have to add their details before travelling.
So far, the app is available across the Strathclyde area and routes between Strathclyde and Edinburgh.

If the trial is successful, ScotRail will look to roll out the app more widely across the network.
