In January 1999, Jay Abatan, a 42-year-old accountant from Eastbourne, was enjoying a night out in Brighton, with his brother Michael, to celebrate a promotion at work.
He was attacked outside the Ocean Rooms in Morley Street in Brighton, in what Michael Abatan has always believed was a racially motivated attack. Jay Abatan died days later from injuries sustained in the attack.
The vigil to remember Jay Abatan – as with many other vigils held by the family since Jay’s death – will take place at Brighton Police Station on John Street from 11am to 12pm and will also issue a new appeal for any witnesses to come forward.
An associate of the suspected attackers has recently come forward to support the campaign for justice and plans to attend the Vigil. Sian Berry, MP for Brighton Pavilion and Bella Sankey, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, have been invited to speak at the Vigil, having shown support for the campaign.
An investigation heavily criticised Sussex Police, concluding officers had not given enough consideration to the possibility the attack was racially motivated.
Sussex police has apologised to Jay Abatan’s family for their failures in their investigation into Jay’s death.
