Kevin Burchett was enjoying the sunshine at the White Rock Hotel on Friday, January 3, when he and his friends were treated to the rare visit.
A humpback whale was spotted by many off the coast of Hastings, putting on a show for those watching by breaching the water multiple times.
Kevin said: “We noticed a crowd of people looking over the railings. At first, we thought they were looking at maybe a seal on the beach but I noticed something jump out of the sea about a mile or so out so carried on watching.
“I had my camera in my hands just in case I saw this creature, whatever it was again.
“I wasn’t disappointed, after about a minute it breached again and carried on doing so for at least half an hour or more steadily moving west.
“By this time there was quite a crowd gathering. My friends and I went over the road to the west side of the pier.

“We could see it was getting further out and more distant but I consider myself very lucky seeing this humpback whale now.
“I’ve seen basking sharks, dolphins, porpoises and nearly every other day we see seals.
“I’m very lucky living near the seaside and the humpback whale just topped it all.”
Sussex Dolphin Project confirmed that it was a rare sighting of a humpback whale.
A spokeswoman for the group said: “Humpback whale sightings off the coast of Sussex are rare but not completely unexpected at this time of year, we tend to have reports of one or two passing through around this time of year.
“They spend the winter feeding up in and around the Arctic circle, and migrate back down towards the tropics and their breeding grounds around this time of year.
“The majority of whales travel down the west coast of the UK, however a few take a different turning when they get to the top of Scotland and travel down the East Coast, past Dover, and through the channel to the Atlantic.
“This year the whales seem determined to give us a good show.”
