This was in response to a public question from Mr Christopher Hawtree as to whether the popular FitLab gym and the boxing club currently there would be a part of the proposed new King Alfred development? Cllr Robins said Fitlab would not be a part of it.
I am wondering how we can possibly have a bigger and better facility than currently available when our council’s plan is to use only 20 per cent of the current area. Surely the figures don’t add up and we will lose more than we gain, such as the sprung-floor ballroom.
I have lived in Hove for over 30 years and have seen the demise of the King Alfred, from the closure of the bowling alley and laser zone, which my children used regularly and loved, and now the loss of facilities set to continue.
Much of the site is allocated for sale to private developers which will swamp our seafront with mammoth tower blocks, as it is allocated a tall building area, and will be bought by profit making private developers with the doubtful promise of some “affordable” housing which rarely materialises or is not truly affordable. The sale of this public asset once gone is gone.
I beg our council to consider what will be lost if their current plan comes to pass. What is the legacy they leave for future generations. A towering skyline and a small, uninspiring token leisure centre.
