At 12.15am on New Year’s Day a yellow weather warning for strong winds came into force in Sussex, with gusts of up to 50mph battering the coast.
New Year’s Day travellers had their journeys disrupted this morning when two trees fell on the railway – one between Haywards Heath and Gatwick Airport and another on the East Grinstead line.
The tree blocking routes to Gatwick was swiftly removed, however the one near East Grinstead caused more disruption due to a train hitting it. It was eventually cleared at around 10.45am.
A tree fell in Downview Road, Worthing, which appeared to damage a garden wall.
Pictures and videos of Worthing and Brighton seafront demonstrate just how strong the winds were, with waves crashing onto sea walls and grey swells churning under the dark skies.
Worthing Borough Council was forced to close the pier for the whole day due to “dangerously high winds”. It said that it would not be safe for people to walk on the pier during the period of bad weather.

West Sussex Highways team also appeared to make preparations for the windy weather, cutting down a tree in Chichester city centre yesterday, December 31.
The roots of the tree had begun to lift the surrounding paving slabs due to persistent rain and strong winds. The team took the “emergency” measure to stop the tree from falling down.
It has now been chopped to a stump of one to two metres. The benches surrounding it will be cordoned off until further notice.
An ice rink in Bognor, Ice Skating in the Park, made was delayed in opening from 10am until 1.15pm due to the high winds. The rink staff apologised for the inconvenience but said it had to put “safety first”.
The intense weather shows no signs of letting up, with another yellow weather warning for snow issued by the Met Office for Sussex this morning, which comes into effect on Saturday, January 4.
The yellow weather warning for wind ended today at 3pm.
