A severely neglected dog with rotten teeth and fleas has been rescued after being found dumped in a box.
The eight-year-old pooch known as Birdie was found abandoned in Breach Lane, Upchurch earlier today.
She was taken in by Swale Borough Council’s Stray Dog Service who assessed her before taking her to Happy Endings Rescue in Faversham where she will be cared for.
The council says she is microchipped and inquiries are ongoing.
Posting an appeal for information on Facebook, the Stray Dog Service said: “She has been the subject of abject cruelty.
“Whilst we can’t speculate on what has caused her facial injuries, a biopsy will be performed to rule out aggressive forms of cancer.
“A vet has scored Birdie as a one out of nine on the body condition scale.
“Many of her teeth are rotten and she is infested with fleas, which she’s since been treated for.
“Birdie is only eight years old. This is severe neglect as mandated under The Animal Welfare Act 2006.
“If you have any information relating to this dog or her owner, please contact SBC on 01795 417850.
“Thankfully, our good friends at Happy Endings Rescue have agreed to help and will be taking over her medical needs.”
Happy Endings Rescue has also shared a post on Facebook saying volunteers will do “everything they can to save her”.
They have asked supporters to “keep Birdie in your thoughts and prayers”.
