The 38-year-old from Portsmouth was approached by two men and assaulted as he made his way along the River Lavant towpath in Avenue de Chartres, Chichester.
A small amount of cash was taken during the robbery.
Police are investigating the incident, which happened at about 6.45am on Thursday, November 14, and have appealed for witnesses and information.

The first attacker was 6ft and skinny, aged about 30, wearing a light coloured hooded top pulled over to conceal his face.
The second was 5ft 5in and of stocky build, with unkempt black hair and a beard, aged in his mid 20s. He wore a green coat without a hood which displayed a logo on the chest, and dark coloured jogging bottoms.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Officers are investigating and want anyone who may have been in the area at the time to come forward, including anyone with relevant CCTV, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage.
“Information can be reported to Sussex Police online quoting serial 261 of 14/11.”
