Brighton’s Western Road was closed with buses queuing throughout the city centre after chunks of stonework from above the Ann Summers shop tumbled to the floor.

Firefighters closed the road to take loose chunks off the building to make it safe as Sussex continues to be battered by winds during today’s yellow weather warning.

Buses sat motionless outside Churchill Square as two East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service pumps worked to make the building safe.

Pavement outside Ann Summers was shut while firefighters used an aerial platform to reach the remaining stonework and take it off the building to ensure it was safe.

Crowds of Christmas shoppers stood and watched as the fire crews left a pile of rubble on the Western Road pavement as they worked to make the building safe.

Firefighters have since left the scene and the road has re-opened with traffic now flowing as normal.

The issues come amid the high winds of Storm Darragh which has wreaked havoc on Sussex this afternoon.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for wind has been extended to 6pm on Sunday with trees toppling across the county and Christmas events cancelled.

Events cancelled included Brighton’s new Winter Fayre, Hove Promenade’s Parkrun and Santa Dash events and Santa’s Grotto in Brighton Marina.

Winds of up to 60mph were forecast for the coastline with further disruption expected into the evening.
