The fourth named storm of the season is set to bring with it winds of up to 80mph and some heavy downpours when it arrives in Sussex this afternoon (Friday, December 6).

Along with a Met Office weather warning in place from 3pm until Sunday, the Environment Agency has also issued five flood alerts affecting East and West Sussex.

These are the River Adur East Branch, affecting Burgess Hill; the Upper River Medway, affecting Crowborough; the Cuckmere River near Seaford; Combe Haven between Bexhill and Hastings and the River Rother near Rye.

A flood alert means flooding is possible.

The Combe Haven alert said: “From 23:00 05/12/2024 minor flooding could affect fields, rural roads and a small number of gardens in Crowhurst.

“Potentially including Crowhurst Recreation Ground, and riverside properties on Forewood Lane, and near the Plough public house.

“Property flooding is not currently expected.”

The River Adur alert said: “From 23:00 05/12/2024 minor flooding could affect the A281 at Mock Bridge, near Shermanbury.

“As well as extensive water in fields, flooding could also affect gardens of properties near Mock Bridge and may begin to approach buildings too.

“The river should initially begin to fall by 12:00 06/12/2024.

“However, a further 10-15mm of rain is predicted Friday evening, which will likely cause the River Adur to rise again through the early hours of Saturday.

“River levels might not return nearer to normal until Sunday 08/12/2024.”

The Cuckmere River alert said: “From 20:00 05/12/2024 minor flooding could affect fields, rural roads, and gardens including on Mill Lane, Station Road, Church Lane and Church Road, Hellingly.

“From 06:00 06/12/2024 minor flooding could also affect North Street, Willows Car Park, River Lane, The Old Clergy House and Deans Place Hotel, Alfriston.

“The river should initially begin to fall in Hellingly by 08:00 06/12/2024, and 18:00 06/12/2024 in Alfriston.

“However, a further 10-15mm of rain is predicted Friday evening, which will likely cause the rivers to rise again early on Saturday.

“River levels might not return nearer to normal until Sunday 08/12/2024.”
